Room by Emma Donoghue

The Exoteric Book Club had a great discussion about the Room by Emma Donoghue. The book was an excellent depiction of the plight of a woman abducted for sexual purposes, with no concern for human decency, and kept in a garden shed in the back yard for 7 years. She was impregnated by her captor that resulted in the birth of her son, Jack. The story was told through the eyes of 5 year-old Jack. Some of the members quickly tired of the first person dialogue typical of a child, but soon came to appreciate the effectiveness of this approach to revealing the story. The author chose not to reveal any portion of the captor’s point of view, which was in complete agreement with the book club members who had complete disdain for the captor.
